The Greater Detroit District is pleased to welcome Stephanie Kenneh as the new Special Initiatives Coordinator. In this role, Stephanie will work closely with the District Superintendent to support district-wide initiatives and help coordinate key events, including the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.
Stephanie brings a strong background in communications, advertising, and event coordination. She recently earned her Master of Arts in Communication and has experience in social media management, media operations, and coordinating events in a variety of settings. Through this work, she has developed skills not only in communicating effectively but also in listening, observing trends, and learning how to bring people together through meaningful experiences.
What drew Stephanie to the role was the opportunity to grow and step outside her comfort zone. She enjoys planning events and is excited about the chance to help lead initiatives that will be both challenging and fulfilling. One of the aspects she looks forward to most is getting to know the people of the Greater Detroit District more deeply. “We have such a large community, and I only know a fraction of those people,” she shared. “I would love to gain new ideas from those around me.”
A central responsibility of the position is helping lead the district’s annual MLK Celebration, something that holds personal meaning for Stephanie. Growing up, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the first Black activists she learned about, and his teachings shaped the way she sees the world. She has also experienced the impact of his legacy firsthand, receiving scholarships in his name and later recommending other students for the same opportunity. For Stephanie, continuing Dr. King’s message of justice and nonviolence feels especially important today. “You never know what someone else may do,” she said, “but you always have control of how you act.”
Stephanie believes her experience supporting leadership teams and coordinating events will serve her well in this role. Having observed strong leaders and successful programs in previous positions, she values learning from those experiences and applying those lessons while remaining open to new ideas.
As she begins her work with the district, Stephanie hopes the initiatives she helps lead will bring fresh energy and connection. She especially hopes clergy and congregations will experience something new while also seeing that young adults who grew up in the church continue to care deeply about its future. “Most of all,” she says, “I hope they will experience joy and community.”
A lifelong learner, Stephanie believes the best way to grow is by participating and engaging fully in the work. She is eager to learn more about the church, the district, and the history and meaning of the MLK Celebration through hands-on involvement.
Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys reading and watching movies, and she describes herself as someone who loves conversation. If you see her at an event or around the district, she hopes you will stop and say hello.
