Jerome Walker is one of Michigan’s recently released Juvenile Lifers. Originally sentenced to life without parole for a crime committed at age 17, Mr. Walker remained incarcerated for 26 years. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional to sentence minors to life without the possibility of parole. Since that decision, the Michigan State Appellate Defender Office (SADO) has worked to secure resentencing and release for individuals like Mr. Walker.
The Greater Detroit District (GDD) Church & Society Committee, in partnership with several member churches, has joined this important work by providing gifts of clothing and essential items to Juvenile Lifers on the day of their release. Funded by local congregations, this effort offers dignity, compassion, and a fresh start to those beginning a new chapter.
Upon his release, Mr. Walker received these gifts—and in turn, offered us one. He sent a heartfelt letter of thanks to the GDD faith community, expressing his deep appreciation. His words remind us that even the smallest acts of kindness can echo across a lifetime.
Dear GDD Church, may God bless you,
I want to thank you for the gifts that I received from y’all. It has surpassed what I ever had expected and I am so grateful, appreciative and humble to receive this greatest gift of my coming home.
Y’all rocks and thank God for all he has done and provided. Keep up the good work and once again thank you from the bottom of my heart!
I will cherish the blessing I was given forever.
Jerome
