Walking in Prayer

Walking in Prayer: A Journey of Reflection and Renewal

by Shirlee Beasley, CLS

The January 2025 National Camp & Retreat Leaders Gathering hosted at Camp Allen the Episcopal Diocese of Texas camp site where Contreda Navarro and I representing the United Methodist Urban Youth Alliance (UMUYA) presented “Walk the Labyrinth in Prayer”,

This year’s camp workshop introduced a creative and impactful way to connect with faith through prayer: a labyrinth. The activity encouraged young campers to explore the power of prayer while also learning the difference between a maze and a labyrinth. Unlike a maze, the labyrinth offers a clear and intentional path, guiding participants to express their thoughts and seek spiritual connection.

As the campers walked the path, they encountered scripture passages aligned with the camp’s theme, providing moments of reflection and inspiration. Upon reaching the center, they were invited to unburden themselves in prayer, guided by The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9–13), the 23rd Psalm, and the Serenity Prayer. These stations offered valuable tools for those who may be new to prayer or seeking deeper connection.

The journey didn’t end there. As participants exited the labyrinth, they passed along a path lined with the Fruits of the Spirit—reminders of the qualities a renewed spirit embodies in the world. It was a powerful conclusion to a thoughtful and transformative experience.

This workshop not only introduced young people to prayer but also demonstrated that prayer can take many forms. It offered a space for reflection, spiritual growth, and renewal, leaving campers with lessons and memories to carry forward.
